Source = e-Travel Blackboard: W.X Officials have confirmed that 158 people have died after Air India Express IX812 from Dubai to Mangalore overshot the runway and plunged over a cliff upon landing at the airport on Saturday.Carrying 160 passengers and six crew members, the disaster has now made its mark in India’s history as the worst air disaster in a decade. Earlier confusion over the number of survivors have now been confirmed as eight not seven. Those who survived are understood to have been sitting in the middle of the plane. They were believed to have been able to jump free from the Boeing 737-800 before the plane burst into flames.“The accident occurred after the aircraft landed at Mangalore airport and overshot the runway,” confirms Air India, parent company of Air India Express.Nearly all of the 156 bodies have now been recovered, identified and relatives contacted, adds Air India. Both black boxes of the Boeing aircraft have now been recovered by investigators who will now probe the cockpit recorder as well as the flight data recorder for more information on how the aircraft overshot the runway.India’s air traffic control has since confirmed that visibility was good the morning of the crash, though there had been a light drizzle it was not raining at the time. Nothing appeared to be at fault during the descent and initial touch-down.Eye-witnesses on scene have reported that a wheel may have burst on the runway, but no reports have yet been handed down by air crash investigators.
