Blue Jays Inching Closer to Acquiring RA Dickey from

The Toronto Blue Jays are inching closer to acquiring 2012 Cy Young award winner R.A. Dickey from the New York Mets, according to multiple sources. There were several other teams that were strongly interested in the services of Dickey, but the Mets decided to channel their negotiations with the Blue Jays and cut off all other discussions with the other teams, according to CBSSports.com.As of Saturday morning a major league executive aware of the negotiations told ESPNNewYork.com that both teams are working towards completing the trade. The Mets have discussed acquiring the Blue Jays top catching prospect Travis d’Arnaud, who they previously did not want to include, and center fielder Anthony Gose.Last season while playing in Triple-A in Las Vegas, the 23-year-old d’Arnaud had a batting average of .333, on base percentage of .380, a slugging average of .595 and 16 home runs.Dickey has yet to discuss extension talks, nor has he been asked to take a physical according to sources close with ESPNNewYork.com.The 38-year-old Dickey put together impressive numbers to win the 2012 Cy Young award. He led the NL with 233 2/3 innings pitched and finished second with an ERA of 2.73. He also led the league in strikeouts with 230 and owns a lifetime career ERA of 3.98 over 10 major-league seasons.Dickey, who is under contract with the Mets next season for $5 million, attempted to negotiate an extension with the club, but both sides were approximately $6 million apart. The Mets offered Dickey a two-year extension worth $20 million, while Dickey requested a two-year extension for $26 million. The knuckleballer made his frustrations known publically about the negotiations while attending a holiday party earlier this week at Citi Field for children affected by Hurricane Sandy.“In the context of the market, you want what you think is fair,” Dickey told reporters. “I feel like we’re asking for less than what’s fair because that’s how it’s been for me.” read more

2014 Magazine Launches Outpacing Last Year in Q1

first_imgMediafinder has released its first quarter report on magazine launches and closures. This year is shaping up better than the previous year, as 45 print magazines launched in 2014 verses 27 in 2013.There is some bad news, however. Closures this year outpaced 2013, with 14 versus 9. Still, that equals a two-year net market gain of 48 new (or revived) titles in Q1.Breaking it down further, 36 of the launches this year are consumer-facing titles and 9 are in the b-to-b space. But all 14 closures this year are consumer titles. In 2009 there was a net market loss of more than 120 titles over the entire year, and things looked bleak. However, the industry is clearly rebounding–with stable net gains since 2010.last_img read more

Marketing Solutions Provider Madison Logic Buys B2B Ad Platform BBN

first_img The transaction gives Madison Logic, known for its demand generation and data services, the ability to offer “top of funnel,” or display, advertising options for B2B marketers. And by acquiring BBN, Madison Logic doesn’t just add to its service offerings. The company now has direct access to 1,600 publisher brands to pitch its lead-gen services to. On top of that, the deal brings the company closer to agencies and trading desks doing programmatic buys with BBN. “Everyone is getting into everyone else’s business,” says Madison Logic CEO Tom O’Regan. “And even though they all need to generate sales, what’s still important is repositioning, generating awareness and differentiating their products.” In a gap-closing deal, marketing solutions firm Madison Logic has acquired B2B media advertising platform BBN. “Of course, we’ll work with brands and agencies directly, but we did see an opportunity to work with larger trading desks that are working with BBN,” O’Regan says. “The revenue is not just from direct sources, but from programmatic and trading desk relationships.” In other words, as important as audience segmentation and lead-gen has become, marketers still need to make buyers aware of their products in the first place. “The same customers who were using us for demand generation were not using us for top-of-the-funnel awareness,” adds O’Regan.center_img O’Regan declined to offer sale terms, but says the deal is projected to almost double the company’s revenue in 2015. Marrying data to lead nurturing and generation, along with branding opportunities, is a valuable position to be in. LinkedIn bought marketing technology and lead-gen platform Bizo for $175 million in July 2014. That deal lets LinkedIn more closely target and measure B2B marketing campaigns across its network. Ironically, all four of those companies have since divested their B2B media assets, but the ad network has since grown to include a who’s who of 1,600 publisher brand URLs reaching a global audience of 120 million, says O’Regan. Cue BBN, a digital ad platform launched in 2008 with just four publishers: Cygnus Business Media, Nielsen Business Media, Reed Business Information and McGraw-Hill.last_img read more

Diablo III accounts are being hacked

first_imgAnyone who picked up Diablo III at launch has no doubt suffered a lot of frustration when trying to play the game. The mere mention of “Error 33” will make many wince. But it seems there’s a new threat to advancing your character through the game: accounts are being hacked.Over the weekend a growing number of reports were logged of accounts being hacked. In each case the legitimate user loses control of their login and friends find themselves talking to a complete stranger. They usually turn out to be someone who has purchased the account and is now playing in their place. Or at least, that’s what is being said during a chat session. It could actually be the hacker using the account and making up an excuse to distance themselves from the hijacking. It’s unclear why this is able to happen, but it seems to be occurring regardless of whether your account is protected by one of Blizzard’s authenticators or not. That suggests the hackers are somehow hijacking active sessions, which would bypass the need to recheck security on that account. For the affected gamer it’s a case of contacting Blizzard and waiting for your account to be rolled back to a pre-hacked state. That inevitably leads to some progress being lost. The hacker/s is also taking the opportunity to steal gold and items, of course.Apparently Blizzard took the European servers offline on Sunday for 4 hours following many of these reports. It could be the downtime was related and they have patched the hole. But be aware that even with Blizzard’s requirement for a constant Internet connection, your account is vulnerable to attack.Read more at Eurogamer.netlast_img read more

Happy concert for underprivileged children

first_imgWhile everyone is busy with Diwali preparation, there are many less fortunate children who are deprived of celebrating and sharing the joy of the festival. And even though there are myriad organisations working towards their well-being, food and shelter, only a few go beyond their way for the underprivileged children’s happiness. Music can be a vessel for good as it creates happiness in everyone’s lives. It is like a stress buster and increases the happiness quotient in a person’s life. Keeping this in mind, this Diwali, The Artiste Foundation (TAF) and Musical Dreams have started an initiative to spread the festive cheer and happiness amongst the underprivileged with a “Happy Concert”. Team TAF and young artists of Musical Dreams Shruti Dhasmana (singer) and Ram Nepali (Guitarist) visited a school for underprivileged children, Naya Prayas at Bhatti Mines where the artists performed for children on various Bollywood songs. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfMeeta Nagpal, founder of TAF said, “Entertainment and music is everyone’s need. We perform for people of all walks of life. We realized that the less privileged people have limited options for entertainment due to scarce resources. With Diwali round the corner, we thought it as the best time to spread joy and happiness to these kids. Our motive to do these concerts is solely to spread happiness. Their claps, smiling faces and dancing moves encourage us to spread happiness in whatever way we can. This is our little contribution towards the society.” Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveSinger Shruti Dhasmana who along with Ram Nepali performed at the occasion shared, “I have performed at various national and international concerts in front of different sets of audience. This was my first time when I was performing in front of underprivileged kids and I must say this is amongst my most memorable performances so far. After performing here I have realized that money can’t buy you happiness and the love which I have received”.last_img read more

The Autobiography Black retains the same off-road capability of all Range Rovers, enhanced for 2011 by two additions to the innovative Terrain Response system: Hill Start Assist and Gradient Acceleration Control. On road, the Adaptive Dynamics suspension technology offers firm control of body motions through turns while providing the renowned calm, composed Range Rover ride quality.Terrain Response enhancements Range Rovers have long been kings of the off-road, and the 2011 models, with further enhancements to Terrain Response, bolster that tradition. This innovative vehicle control system gains new Hill Start Assist and Gradient Acceleration Control (GAC). By momentarily holding brake pressure when the driver’s foot moves from the brake pedal to the accelerator, Hill Start Assist helps prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when moving from a standstill on an incline. Gradient Acceleration Control is designed to provide an extra measure of safety on severe inclines when the driver does not have Hill Descent Control engaged. By pressurizing the brake system, GAC slows the vehicle to a limit determined by the throttle position when descending the slope in Drive or Reverse. Otherwise – such as when descending while facing up the gradient with Drive selected – GAC restricts speed to 5km/h (3.1mph) for up to 20 seconds, enabling the driver to regain control. The Terrain Response system had in 2010 been augmented with Sand Launch Control for easier drive-away; revisions to the Rock Crawl Program for greater control on rocky terrain, and Gradient Release Control, which restricts the rate of initial acceleration when descending steep inclines.Www.landrover.comlast_img read more

Why Most Gold Bugs Are Dead Wrong By Jim Rickard

first_img Why Most Gold Bugs Are Dead Wrong By Jim Rickards, Editor, Jim Rickards’ Strategic Intelligence May 22, 2015 One of the most persistent story lines among gold bugs and market participants who foresee the collapse of the dollar goes something like this: I’m doing something a bit different in addition to today’s Gold & Silver Daily… I consider Jim Rickards to be one of the brightest minds in the financial markets today. He’s worked with many of the largest financial institutions and government agencies—and as you know, he’s also written two New York Times best-sellers about the problems with today’s monetary system: Currency Wars and The Death of Money. In today’s piece, Jim explains why one of the most dearly held beliefs of gold bugs is simply not true. It was originally published in the May issue of Jim Rickards’ Strategic Intelligence. I hope you enjoy. China and many emerging markets, including the other BRICS, are looking for a way out of the global fiat currency system. That system is dominated today by the US dollar. This dollar dominance allows the US to force certain kinds of behavior in foreign policy and energy markets. Countries that don’t comply with US wishes find themselves frozen out of global payment systems and find their banks unable to transact in dollars for needed imports or to get paid for their exports. Russia, Iran, and Syria have all been subjected to this treatment recently. China doesn’t like this system any more than Russia or Iran but is unwilling to confront the US head-on. Instead, China is quietly accumulating massive amounts of gold and building alternative financial institutions, such as the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank, AIIB, and the BRICS-sponsored New Development Bank (NDB). When the time is right, China will suddenly announce its actual gold holdings to the world and simultaneously turn its back on the Bretton Woods institutions such as the IMF and World Bank. China will back its currency with its own gold and use the AIIB, NDB, and other institutions to lead a new global financial order. Russia and others will be invited to join the Chinese in this new international monetary system. As a result, the dollar will collapse, the price of gold will skyrocket, and China will be the new global financial hegemon. The gold bugs will live happily ever after. The only problem with this story is that the most important parts of it are wrong. As usual, the truth is much more intriguing than the popular version. Here’s what’s really going on. As with most myths, parts of the story are true. China is secretly acquiring thousands of tons of gold. China is creating new multilateral lending institutions. No doubt, China will announce an upward revision in its official gold holdings sometime in the next year or so. In fact, Bloomberg News reported on April 20, 2015, under the headline “The Mystery of China’s Gold Stash May Soon Be Solved” that “China may be preparing to update its disclosed holdings …” But the reasons for the acquisition of gold and the updated disclosures—if they happen—are not the ones the blogosphere believes. China isn’t trying to destroy the old boys’ club—it’s trying to join it. China understands that despite the strong growth and huge size of its economy, the yuan is not ready to be a true reserve currency and will not be ready for years to come. It is true that usage of the yuan is increasing in international transactions. But it is still used for fewer than 2% of global payments, compared with over 40% for the US dollar. Usage in payments is only one indicium of a true reserve currency… and not the most important one. The key to being a reserve currency isn’t payments, but investments. There needs to be a deep, liquid bond market denominated in the reserve currency. That way, when countries earn the target currency in trade, they have someplace to invest the surplus. Right now, if you earn yuan trading with China, all you can do with the money is leave it in a bank deposit or spend it in China. There is no large yuan-denominated bond market to invest in. In addition to a bond market, you need the “plumbing” of a bond market. This includes a network of primary dealers; hedging tools such as futures and options; financing tools such as repurchase agreements, derivatives, clearance, and settlement channels; and a good rule of law to settle disputes, secure creditors, and deal with bankruptcies. China has none of these things on the needed scale or level of maturity. When it comes to true reserve-currency status, the yuan is not ready for prime time. China is also not ready to launch a gold-backed currency. Even if it has 10,000 tons of gold—far more than it currently admits—the market value of that gold is only about $385 billion. China’s M1 money supply as of April 2015 is about $5.4 trillion. In other words, even on assumptions highly favorable to China, its gold is worth only about 7% of its money supply. Historically, countries that want to run a successful gold standard need 20–40% of the money supply in gold in order to stand up to bank runs in the market. China could reduce its money supply to get to the 20% level, but this would be extremely deflationary and throw the Chinese economy into a depression that would trigger political instability. So that won’t happen. In short, China can’t have a reserve currency because it doesn’t have a bond market, and it can’t have a gold-backed currency because it has nowhere near enough gold. So what is China’s plan? China wants to do what the US has done, which is to remain on a paper currency standard but make that currency important enough in world finance and trade to give China leverage over the behavior of other countries. The best way to do that is to increase its voting power at the IMF and have the yuan included in the IMF basket for determining the value of the special drawing right. Getting those two things requires the approval of the United States, because the US has veto power over important changes at the IMF. The US can stand in the way of Chinese ambitions. The result is a kind of grand bargain in which China will get the IMF status it wants, but the US will force China to be on its best behavior in return. This means that China must keep the yuan pegged to the dollar at or near the current level. It also means that China can have gold but can’t talk about it. In order to “join the club,” China must play by club rules. The rules of the game say you need a lot of gold to play, but you don’t recognize the gold or discuss it publicly. Above all, you do not treat gold as money, even though gold has always been money. The members of the club keep their gold handy just in case, but otherwise, they publicly disparage it and pretend it has no role in the international monetary system. China will be expected to do the same. It’s important to note that China will not act in the best interests of gold investors; it will act in the best interests of China. Moreover, just because the grand bargain is in sight does not mean it will be easy to realize. Both sides are jockeying for leverage. Beijing launched its own development bank to put pressure on the IMF. The US Treasury blames the Tea Party for delays in approving China’s new votes at the IMF. Meanwhile, the White House does nothing to break the logjam in Congress. The White House is happy to let China twist in the wind while the game goes on behind closed doors. Meanwhile, China will probably announce its increased gold holdings later this year. But don’t expect fireworks. China has three accounts where it keeps gold: the People’s Bank of China (PBOC); the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE); and the China Investment Corp. (CIC). China can move enough gold to PBOC when it’s ready and report that to the IMF for purposes of allowing the yuan in the SDR. Meanwhile, it can still hide gold in SAFE and CIC until it needs it in the future. China will also probably be admitted into the SDR basket later this year. Far from launching its own gold-backed currency, China will be acknowledging that the SDR is the true world money as far as the major powers are concerned. Why would China want to give up on fiat money any more than the Fed or the European Central Bank? All central banks prefer paper money to gold because they can print the paper kind. Why give up on that monopoly of power? Gold is still the safest asset, and every investor should have some in his portfolio. The price of gold will go significantly higher in the years ahead. But contrary to what you read in the blogs, gold won’t go higher because China is confronting the US or launching a gold-backed currency. It will go higher when all central banks—China’s and the U.S.’s included—confront the next global liquidity crisis, which will be worse than the one in 2008, and individual citizens stampede into gold to preserve wealth in a world that has lost confidence in all central banks. When that happens, physical gold may not be available at all. The time to build your personal gold reserve is now. P.S. Buying gold and silver is only one way to profit from the current distortions in currency markets. While most investors will be caught completely off guard by the result of this money manipulation, a small group of informed participants could make a fortune. Since 1995, the annual event benefits The Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care, whose mission is “to provide comfort, support and hope to cancer patients and their families.” This year’s show at the TD Garden in Boston on Nov. 18 boasts a mega lineup of stars includes Jimmy Fallon, Craig Ferguson and Jeff Ross, among many others. Tickets are on sale here.Entrepreneur sat down with the bruising Bruin to discuss his passion for helping others, leadership, and tips for building a team that hates to lose. This is the 23rd year of Comics Come Home. What has driven you to do this year after year? Both of my parents were diagnosed with cancer at a young age and passed away. Most professional athletes do a number of charitable things throughout their careers, and when cancer struck my family, I decided to start this foundation focused on areas of care that I saw was lacking. Families suffer so much when a loved one is sick. So we have two main parts: The Neely Cancer Fund which supports treatment and research efforts and The Neely House, built in memory of my parents, which gives families a convenient, comfortable place to live and relax and be around others while undergoing treatment. How did Denis Leary get involved?Denis is from Worcester Mass. I first came to Boston in 1986, instead of going to movies I enjoyed going to comedy shows. Through some mutual friends, I met Denis and we became friends. I asked him if he would consider doing some standup for a benefit for our foundation, and he did so much more. Comics Come Home is really his brainchild, he pulled together his friends from the Boston clubs and it has grown so much from there.Related: (Survey) A Quarter of Cancer Patients Use Legal Medical MarijuanaWhether it is running your foundation or your hockey team, how would you describe your decision-making style? It’s really all about having the right conversations with the right people to get the right information. You need to digest the facts and then ultimately not be afraid to make a decision. The toughest thing is understanding that your decisions could impact other people’s lives, but you can’t be afraid to do what you think it’s right. You just have to believe it and move forward. What do you look for in new hires? One of my favorite questions to ask people — especially prospective players — is, “Do you love to win or do you hate to lose?” There’s a big difference. Everybody loves to win. I hate losing. And I love when great teamwork works. In a sort of surprise event (CEO Elon Musk tweeted it out two days ago), Tesla announced the $35,000 Standard Range Model 3 is available for order. The automaker has been working diligently to streamline its production line and lower unit costs of the Model 3. You can order it right now.The rear-wheel-drive car will have a 220-mile range, a top speed of 130 miles per hour and a zero to 60 time of 5.6 seconds. The $35,000 Model 3 will enter the market that’s becoming increasingly crowded. The Chevy Bolt, Kia Niro EV and Hyundai Kona EV are all in the same price point and have about the same amount of range. But none of them have the cache of the Model 3.The lower-priced Model 3 will have a few caveats including a new “standard interior.” That means cloth seats, manual steering wheel adjustment, a base trim, basic audio and standard maps and navigation. Gone are the fog lamps and docking ports for a smartphone. But it will have four USB ports, so that’s not a huge loss.Oh, it’s also only available in black at that cost. Blue and silver paint will set you back $1,500, white paint is $2,000 and if you want red, it’s going to cost you a whopping $2,500. Fortunately, black cars are cool. The car will still have the glass roof (woohoo), and folding heated side mirrors. The company went with a more basic interior for the lower-priced vehicle which should be expected.Tesla also announced a Standard Range Plus vehicle with 240-miles of range before you need to hit up a Supercharger. It also has a better interior than the Standard Range Model 3 with adjustable seats, better materials and upgraded audio. The pricing of both of these vehicles does not include the Autopilot suite ( Autosteer and Traffic Aware Cruise Control) which is $3,000 before delivery and $4,000 after delivery. So if after a while you want to upgrade your vehicle with the driver’s assistance package it’ll cost $4,000 and you’ll get an over the air update. The new full self-driving capability (it includes the above and Summon, Autopark, Navigate on Autopilot and future self-driving capabilities) will cost $5,000 before delivery and $7,000 after delivery.Currently, the delivery date for the Standard Range version is two to four weeks in the United States and according to Musk, additional places on the planet in three to six months.Going forward, the way you buy a Tesla will change dramatically. All Tesla’s will now only be available for online order. If you go into a store, they’ll direct you to a computer to order the car that the company says will only take you one minute to purchase. If a $35,000 car is still too rich for your blood, during a call with Musk, he stated that cheaper Tesla vehicles would enter the market in 2-3 years. He reiterated probably closer to three years. If you’re an early reservation holder for this vehicle, you will get first priority according to Musk. So that car you’ve been waiting for is almost ready for pick up. Roberto Baldwinlast_img read more

Scripps Research scientists reveal potential new approach to design HIV vaccines

first_imgReviewed by Alina Shrourou, B.Sc. (Editor)Nov 26 2018A new candidate HIV vaccine from Scripps Research surmounts technical hurdles that stymied previous vaccine efforts, and stimulates a powerful anti-HIV antibody response in animal tests. The new vaccine strategy, described in a paper on November 23 in Science Advances, is based on the HIV envelope protein, Env. This complex, shape-shifting molecule has been notoriously difficult to produce in vaccines in a way that induces useful immunity to HIV.However, the Scripps Research scientists found a simple, elegant method for stabilizing Env proteins in the desired shape even for diverse strains of HIV. Mounted on virus-like particles to mimic a whole virus, the stabilized Env proteins elicited robust anti-HIV antibody responses in mice and rabbits. Candidate vaccines based on this strategy are now being tested in monkeys.”We see this new approach as a general solution to the long-standing problems of HIV vaccine design,” says principal investigator Jiang Zhu, associate professor in the Department of Integrative Structural and Computation Biology at Scripps Research.Copies of Env study the surface of HIV; their chief function is to grab hold of host cells and break into them to initiate infection. Since Env plays this crucial role in infection, and is the viral structure with the most exposure to the immune system of an infected host, it has been the main target of HIV vaccine efforts. The idea has been to inoculate people with the whole Env protein or subunits of it to stimulate the production of Env-binding antibodies, in the hope that these antibodies will prevent HIV from infecting host cells in future exposures to the virus. So far, of course, no HIV vaccine has been effective in large-scale clinical trials. Many researchers believe that an HIV vaccine can work if it presents Env proteins to the immune system in a way that closely resembles the shape of Env on a real virus before it has infected a cell. But presenting Env correctly has been a huge challenge. On an HIV virus, Env protrudes from the viral membrane in tight clusters of three, called trimers, and these complex structures adopt radically different shapes before and after infecting cells. HIV vaccine researchers, despite years and tens of millions of dollars of experimentation, have failed to find a broadly applicable method for stabilizing Env trimers in the desired, pre-infection shape.”The trimer-stabilization solutions that have been reported so far have worked for a few HIV strains but have not been generalizable,” Zhu says. “Env trimer ‘metastability’, as we call it, has really been a central problem for trimer-based HIV vaccine design.”Related StoriesResearch sheds light on sun-induced DNA damage and repairNovel vaccine against bee sting allergy successfully testedEven when HIV prevention drug is covered, other costs block treatmentZhu, trained as a biophysicist, sought a more general solution to the Env stability problem, and in a paper in 2016 he and his Scripps Research colleagues reported that modifying a short, springy section of Env called HR1 might do the trick–it allowed Env to stay in the pre-infection, “closed” shape. In the new study he and his team showed that this strategy does indeed work for Env trimers from diverse HIV strains circulating in different parts of the world. This “uncleaved prefusion-optimized” (UFO) approach, as they call it, yields Env trimers that are stabilized in the closed shape and can be produced efficiently, with surprisingly little need for purification, in the types of cells normally used in biotech manufacturing.”By now in my lab we’ve made this modification to Envs from 30 to 40 different HIV strains, and in most of the cases it has worked like a charm,” Zhu says.He and his colleagues further optimized their vaccine strategy by genetically linking their stabilized Env trimers, up to 60 at a time, to individual nanoparticles that mimic the globular shape of a whole virus. In this way the vaccine molecule, though artificial and lacking the genetic material for viral replication, seems to the immune system very much like a real invading virus and stimulates a stronger reaction. In mice, Zhu and his team found, a sample Env-on-nanoparticles vaccine, within just eight weeks, elicited antibodies that in lab tests successfully neutralized a naturally circulating HIV strain–of a type that prior candidate vaccines generally have failed against.”This is the first time any candidate HIV vaccine has induced this desired type of antibody response in mice,” Zhu says. Similarly unprecedented results were obtained in rabbits, demonstrating that the nanoparticle-based approach is clearly superior to the use of isolated Env proteins–it elicits a significantly stronger response and does so much more quickly.Further tests are now underway in 24 monkeys at the National Institutes of Health-sponsored Southwest National Primate Center in San Antonio, Texas.Zhu and Scripps Research have licensed their HIV vaccine technology to a startup company, Ufovax LLC, which is sponsoring the ongoing tests. “We’re now testing two candidate vaccines based on Env trimers from different HIV strains, plus a third candidate vaccine that is a cocktail of three Env-based vaccines,” says Ji Li, Ufovax CEO. “We think this new approach represents a true breakthrough after 30 years of HIV vaccine research.” Source:https://www.scripps.edu/news-and-events/press-room/2018/20181126-zhu-hiv-vaccine.htmllast_img read more

Experts Suggest Compulsory Measles Vaccination in Children Could Prevent Epidemic

first_imgMandatory immunization is certainly one way to try and increase coverage but it’s far from clear how well it works or whether it would work at all in many places.“If the reasons that the vaccine is not getting into the children relate to easy access, vaccine supply or clarity of information available to parents, then making it compulsory will do nothing to alleviate such obstacles.“If there is widespread mistrust of authority or of the motivation behind any such requirements, it could actually make things worse.”Professor Adam Finn, University of Bristol By Lois Zoppi, BAMay 17 2019Experts from an Italian study have suggested that compulsory measles vaccines before children start attending school may be necessary to prevent increasing disease incidence rates worldwide. However, not everyone agrees that compulsory vaccination would be an effective tactic to combat a resurgence of the disease. Professor Adam Finn of the University of Bristol explains that this approach may not be effective for everybody. Related StoriesResearchers identify gene mutations linked to leukemia in children with Down’s syndromeRevolutionary gene replacement surgery restores vision in patients with retinal degenerationChaos in the house and asthma in children – the connectionCo-author of the study Dr. Stefano Merler is confident about the conclusions made by his study.“Our results suggest that most of the countries we have studied would strongly benefit from the introduction of compulsory vaccination at school entry in addition to current immunization programmes.“In particular, we found that this strategy would allow the UK, Ireland and the US to reach stable herd immunity levels in the next decades, which means that a sufficiently high proportion of individuals are immune to the disease to avoid future outbreaks.“To be effective, mandatory vaccination at school entry would need to cover more than 40 percent of the population.”Smitha Mundasad, a BBC health correspondent said that vaccines “may have become a victim of their own success. Because they’re working so well and doing what they’re supposed to do, maybe people aren’t seeing the serious complications of […] measles anymore.”This may lead to people underestimating the seriousness of the disease and not believing vaccines are necessary. The fall in vaccination is also due to a study that was based on just 12 children drawing links between the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism, leading many people to be wary of vaccinating their children, despite this research being extremely flawed and later disproven and removed by the Lancet where it was first published.Social media is also helping to fuel anti vaccine debates through sharing low quality or inflammatory information.Health Secretary Matt Hancock stated that he was open to considering “all options” to help England raise its vaccination levels, which included bringing in compulsory vaccinations, although he said he did not necessarily want to reach that pointSources In recent years, we’ve witnessed a resurgence of measles cases even in countries where, according to World Health Organization guidelines, elimination should already have been achieved. This resurgence is due to suboptimal vaccination coverage levels.“In Italy, where measles incidence rates were among the highest, the government has made measles vaccination compulsory for children before they enter primary school.“We investigated the potential of this and other policies to reinforce immunization rates in seven high-income countries.”Dr. Filippo Trentini, First Author of the Studycenter_img Shutterstock | Kaspars GrinvaldsWhat is Measles?Measles is a viral disease that is highly contagious and is transmitted through droplets from the nose, mouth, or throat of people infected with the disease. Symptoms of measles progress from fevers, white spots inside the mouth, and bloodshot eyes, to a rash on the face and neck that spreads across the body.Although the infection can clear within 7 to 10 days, it can cause life-threatening complications including blindness, encephalitis (swelling of the brain) and pneumonia. Severe cases of measles are more likely to develop in malnourished, young children, or in people with suppressed immune systems like those living with HIV/AIDS or other diseases that compromise the immune system. Why is Measles an Issue?Despite the NHS stating that measles is now “uncommon in the UK because of the effectiveness of vaccination”, there has been a sharp increase in measles cases worldwide in recent years.Preliminary measles surveillance data for 2019 published by the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed a “clear trend” in measles outbreaks, with outbreaks currently occurring in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Madagascar, Myanmar, Philippines, Sudan, Thailand, and Ukraine. It also states that in 2017, an estimated 110,000 deaths were caused by measles, and mostly affected children under the age of 5. This is despite approximately 85 percent of the world’s children having one dose of the measles vaccine by the age of one.Researchers in Italy have suggested that vaccines for measles should be made compulsory to combat the fall in vaccination rates in several countries, from the US, Ireland, Australia, but particularly in the UK. Researchers from the Bruno Kessler Foundation and Bocconi University expressed concern about the fall in vaccination rates worldwide. Using computer modelling, they have predicted how many measles cases could occur between 2018 and 2050, detailed in a study published in BMC Medicine. The projections made in the study suggest that by 2050, if vaccination policies remain the same, the proportion of the population susceptible to measles would range from 3.7 percent in the UK to 9.3 percent in Italy. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p06jns28/the-news-explained-why-is-there-a-measles-outbreak-in-europe https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/68/wr/mm6817e1.htm https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/measles/ https://www.who.int/immunization/diseases/measles/en/ https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/measleslast_img read more

Study emphasizes the need for personalized dietary plans as not even twins

first_imgFor the first time, we’re expanding large-scale nutritional research beyond blood sugar. These findings show that the responses to food of a number of key metabolic markers – including triglycerides, insulin and blood sugar – are highly individualized. No one has been able to combine data on this scale before.” By Lois Zoppi, BAJun 11 2019Reviewed by Kate Anderton, B.Sc. (Editor)Researchers have found that many widely accepted dietary guidelines are not suitable for everyone, with even twins responding differently to the same foods, despite having nearly identical DNA. This discovery complicates health advice and emphasizes the need for individualized dieting plans.Sebastian Duda | ShutterstockThe new study is the largest scientific nutrition study of its kind and was carried out by researchers from King’s College London, Massachusetts General Hospital, and ZOE, a nutritional science company that is developing personalized nutrition tests. The study, called PREDICT, included approximately 1,100 adult volunteers from the US and UK, including 240 pairs of twins. For two weeks, every participant was asked to eat certain meals and keep track of every single item of food and drink they consumed. From this, researchers were able to analyze how blood levels of sugar, insulin, and fat changes responded to specific meals over the two-week study duration. Researchers also gathered data on activity, sleep, hunger levels, and gut bacteria.Professor Tim Spector, a Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at King’s College London and the lead researcher spoke on the importance of the new study: The ZOE app should be available by 2020. Find out more on the ZOE website. ‘We’re not there yet’Although these findings could open the door for gene-specific dieting, with individuals being able to access data on their specific genetic makeup and the corresponding diet that could help them to lose weight and keep healthy, Deborah Good, an associate professor of human nutrition, foods, and exercise at Virginia Tech, warned:“We don’t know enough about all the different things that contribute to it. Sometime in our lifetime, we may be able to, at least genetically, be given a set of information at the beginning of our lives [about our health needs]. But we’re not there yet, and I don’t know how long it would take.”PREDICT will continue into PREDICT 2, which is an expanded home-based study that began in June 2019. This study will include 1,200 volunteers across the US and UK whose nutritional responses to food will be measured over a period of 11 days, including data on their moods, sleep, and physical activity.ZOE co-founder and President George Hadjigeorgiou said that everyone “deserves to understand how they respond to food so that they can make confident decisions about what to eat and be in control of living a healthier and more enjoyable life,” and as such, the long-term goal is to make ZOE’s studies into an at-home kit and an app that the general public can download to access dietary recommendations. The sheer scale and detail of our scientific project is such that for the first time we can explore tremendously rich nutrition data at the level of an individual. Our results surprisingly show that we are all different in our response to such a basic input as food. It was a real shock to see that even identical twins have such different responses.” Adding to Professor Spector’s comments, co-founder and CEO of ZOE Jonathan Wolf said, “For most of us, the food we eat is the most important medicine we take. And yet we are all profoundly confused about what is good for us. We believe that combining science and machine learning can solve this, by understanding for the first time our individual responses to food.”DNA is not as important as once thoughtResults of the study were presented at the Nutrition 2019 conference and found that individuals had markedly different responses to the same meals, even if their DNA was almost identical, as is seen in twins.Identical twins that were found to have different responses to the same foods only shared 37 percent of their gut bacteria, which is only two percent higher than the 35 percent unrelated individuals share. This small overlap in twin’s gut bacteria may explain why their nutritional responses were so different, despite their very close DNA match. The study’s findings also suggest that individual differences in metabolism because of an individual’s gut bacteria, as well as timings of meals, and exercise, are as important in healthy diets as the nutritional makeup of the food consumed, and DNA may not be as important in determining nutritional responses as is widely believed.Discovering these differences led Professor Spector to hypothesize that diets could be tailored around the microbiome and not just the genome, which could bring on an era of personalized eating and dieting. However, the microbiome is still not fully understood despite it being implicated in many bodily functions. The results have the potential to complicate health and weight loss advice with the implications that nutritional needs are highly individual from person to person.“Our recommendations, medically and public-health wise, have just been assuming that if people follow the standard plan, they’ll lose weight,” said Spector. With his study, he says that line of thinking has “now been exposed as completely flawed.” However, he also added that this doesn’t debunk all nutrition advice:“It doesn’t mean you throw [all nutrition advice] out,” he said. “There are some guidelines and recommendations around the world that near-everybody agrees on.” These guidelines include following a diet that is rich in fiber and low on processed and calorific foods.Dr. Sarah Berry, a Senior Lecturer in Nutritional Sciences at King’s College London and Scientific Advisor at ZOE said: The goal of ZOE and looking at this data is taking a holistic approach to your health. Someone might use it for [weight management] while someone else might want to raise their metabolism or reduce their chances of getting diabetes. It can be used for many different purposes.”Professor Tim Spector, Lead Reseacherlast_img read more
