New Delhi: Home, auto and other loans are set to become cheaper as the government on Friday said the public sector banks will soon be lending at RBI’s benchmark-linked rate and get an additional Rs 70,000-crore upfront capital infusion that will boost their lending capacity in the market by Rs 5 lakh crore. Announcing measures to boost the economy, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the banks would also pass on any change in the benchmark monetary policy rate announced by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) immediately. Also Read – Thermal coal import may surpass 200 MT this fiscalTill now, banks generally lagged in transmitting RBI’s reduction in repo rates to borrowers. The RBI has this year cut interest rates by 110 basis points in four installments but banks have passed only a part of it to borrowers. Before the last reduction earlier this month of 35 basis points, the bank on an average had passed only 29 basis points out of 75 basis points cut affected during 2019. “Banks have again decided to launch repo rate or external benchmarking linked loan products. This will therefore result in reduced EMI for housing loans, vehicle and other retail loans by directly linking repo rate to the interest rates which means the moment reduction happens, it will directly benefit end customers,” Sitharaman said. Also Read – Food grain output seen at 140.57 mt in current fiscal on monsoon boostShe said that the move will also lead to cheaper working capital loans for industry. The finance minister announced upfront capital infusion of Rs 70,000 crore into public sector banks to boost lending and improving liquidity situation. The fund infusion is expected to generate an additional lending and liquidity in the financial system to the tune of Rs 5 lakh crore, Sithraman said at a press conference. “Upfront we are releasing the Rs 70,000 crore and additional lending and liquidity to the tune of Rs 5 lakh crore can be made available by providing this upfront capital for the PSBs. This was announced in the budget, we are doing it upfront now. This will benefit all the corporates, retail borrowers, MSMEs and small traders as well. We are closely working on ways in which this flow will happen to the NBFCs,” Sitharaman said. The minister also announced additional liquidity support of Rs 20,000 crore to housing finance companies (HFCs) by the National Housing Bank (NHB), thereby increasing the total support to Rs 30,000 crore. “NBFCs are receiving liquidity from the banks, and NBFCs are also moving towards funding of people giving credits to people, example shall be out by late evening today. Some of them will come for you all to double check that this has indeed started moving. Therefore the NHB related increase in funding from Rs 20,000 crore to 30,000 crore is sure to make a difference,” Sitharaman said. The finance minister announced partial credit scheme for purchase of pooled assets of non-banking finance companies and HFCs up to Rs 1 lakh crore to be monitored at the highest level in each bank. The minister said that NBFCs will be permitted to use the Aadhaar authenticated ‘Know Your Customer’ (KYC) by banks to avoid repeated processes. “NBFC need not ask for one more time proving and repeating the process. This was a major demand from NBFCs. Aadhaar regulations have also been tweaked to this end,” Sitharaman said. The government has decided to make necessary changes in PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) rules and Aadhaar regulations to ease the lending process. To reduce harassment of borrowers and bring in greater efficiency, public sector banks (PSBs) will ensure mandated return of loan documents within 15 days of loan closure. “This will benefit borrowers who have mortgaged assets,” Sitharaman said. The FM also announced check-box based one-time settlement (OTS) process for MSME loans and measures to protect bank officers deciding on the loan settlement process. “Banks will issue improved transparent one-time settlement policy to benefit MSMEs. This is not theoretical. For OTS of loans, we are approaching it with check-box approach. If a client has complied with the requirements in a one-sheet of paper, use the check-box system and then settle for the OTS rather than say sometime else will have to take a call,” Sitharaman said. She said if the check-box approach is taken up by the MSMEs, there is no reason why somebody else should come and decide the matter. “The banks can there and then decide and clear OTS which are due. Many of the NPAs or many of the bank accounts are waiting for banks to take call because nobody wants to take decision on OTS,” Sitharaman said. The FM said that government has taken adequate steps to make sure that there shall be no harassment of the official for the risk that he is taking to reach OTS “In order to protect honest decision making, the CVC (Central Vigilance Commission) has issued direction that internal advisory committee in banks to classify cases as vigilance and non-vigilance. Decision by IAC and bank’s CVC will be treated as final because that happens there and then decision taking risk will not be laden in the heads so we expect that will protect honest decision making in the banks,” Sitharaman said. The finance minister has announced to start process of online tracking of loan applications by borrowers like it is done for tracking of parcels.

APTN National News OTTAWA–Public Safety Minister Vic Toews has taken on a “John Wayne attitude towards First Nation people” through his government’s plan to create a 50 RCMP officer task force and introduce tougher penalties to fight the underground tobacco trade, according to the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne.Toews announced Tuesday that in addition to a new anti-contraband tobacco unit, the government would introduce a bill to set mandatory minimum jail terms for people involved in the black market tobacco trade.“Sending additional troops from the RCMP isn’t going to resolve the contraband issue,” said a statement from Akwesasne Grand Chief Mike Mitchell. “There are already an insurmountable number of external policing agencies surrounding Akwesasne with the same goal.”Toews’ office did not respond to a request for comment. The RCMP said in an email to APTN National News that the new task force would get no new money and the cost would be absorbed under the existing budget. The RCMP also acknowledged that the rate of tobacco smuggling is decreasing.“The RCMP contraband tobacco seizures have declined over the past few years, which indicates that our efforts have an impact,” said an emailed statement from the RCMP. “However, it remains robust and a lucrative activity for organized crime.”The RCMP said the new task force would deployed “in areas known to have the highest level of contraband tobacco activity” including southern Ontario and the “central St. Lawrence seaway,” which is in and around Akwesasne Mohawk territory. The majority of black market tobacco flows from the U.S., through Akwesasne and into markets across Canada. There are also informal cigarette factories in Kahnawake, which sits next to Montreal, and Six Nations, which is also home to an established tobacco firm called Grand River Enterprises.Akwesasne has also seen a high level of marijuana, cocaine and human trafficking flow through its territory and the presence of organized crime elements has created tensions with local residents. The Akwesasne council, however, said no amount of policing could ever stem the flow of smuggling because it thrives from the jurisdictional tangle that covers the Mohawk territory. Akwesasne district Chief Steve Thomas said Toews should have first visited and met with the people of Akwesasne before launching another wrong-headed plan against the tobacco trade.“(Toews) would see that the problem isn’t the people of Akwesasne, but the multitude of borders that dissect Akwesasne into two countries, two provinces and one state,” said Thomas, in the statement. “The international boundary line zigzags around islands in the St. Lawrence River, making it extremely difficult for contraband to be seized and this weakness has been exploited by external criminal organizations.”The territory of Akwesasne, which sits about 120 kilometres west of Montreal, crosses the Quebec, Ontario and New York State borders.“The long-term solution…is removing the international boundary to one side or the other of Akwesasne…This would make our community whole again and the jurisdictional issues we face would cease to exist,” said Mitchell.Akwesasne is currently negotiating with the Ontario and Quebec governments to legalize the tobacco trade through internal self regulation. In the statement, the Akwesasne council said it is trying to replace the tobacco economy, which has kept the community from falling into abject poverty, with other types of economic development. The Mohawks own “nearly a hundred miles of islands” in the St. Lawrence River and are looking to develop cottage and tourism industries.“Harsher sentences and more police are not the solution to a larger economic issue,” said the statement from the Akwesasne Mohawk Council. “Minister Toews seems to be bent on becoming a poster child of Idle No More with his John Wayne attitude towards First Nations people.”First Nations people introduced Europeans to tobacco and the plant is used in sacred ceremonies. Many Mohawks see the tobacco trade as a right and do not recognize international boundaries imposed by nations they view as foreign.
Toronto Police say they’ve identified a man believed to be another victim of alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur.Last month, police took the unusual step of releasing a photograph of a dead man in the hopes of identifying him. They did not say when the picture was taken or how it was found. That picture led to hundreds of tips from the public – but no positive identification.Earlier this week, police released a new, enhanced version of the photo. On Friday, police confirmed they had been able to identify the man, but would not release his name or details on whether McArthur would face another charge.McArthur, 66, already faces seven counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of men who have connections to Toronto’s LGBTQ community.Police will also be reviewing 15 homicide cold cases from 1975 to 1997 for a possible link to him.McArthur is scheduled to appear in court again Apr. 25.
“We obviously deeply regret the Sudanese Government’s decision to ask for his removal but as I’ve said the Secretary-General continues to have full confidence in Mr. Pronk,” spokesman Stephane Dujarric told the daily news briefing in New York, where Mr. Annan will meet with Mr. Pronk tomorrow.“On Monday, the assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Hédi Annabi met with the Sudanese Permanent Representative Ambassador [Abdalmahmood] Mohamad to protest the decision by the Sudanese Government.” Asked whether there were any plans to appoint a new special representative for Sudan, Mr. Dujarric replied: “Not at all. Mr. Pronk is and remains the Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Sudan with the full backing of the Secretary-General.“He’s back here for consultations… and of course we continue while this issue is ongoing with our work full steam ahead in Sudan both in the South and in Darfur in assisting the African Union mission.” Mr. Annan received the Sudanese Government’s letter on Sunday and requested Mr. Pronk to come to New York for consultations. Mr. Pronk is expected to arrive in New York tonight. As Special Representative he oversees the UN Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS) set up in 2005 to support implementation of a peace agreement between the Government and rebel forces in Southern Sudan. In August this year the Security Council expanded its mandate to include deployment to the western Darfur region to support the “early and effective implementation” with some of the rebels there. But the Sudanese Government has rejected any UN deployment in Darfur, where at least 200,000 people are estimated to have died as a result of the conflict and more than 2 million others have been displaced. At present the UN supports an African Union mission in the region. At present UNMIS has some 10,250 uniformed personnel out of a total of up to 27,300 mandated when the Security Council expanded its mission in August.

Orica’s Dr Geoff Brent and his research team have been recognised for groundbreaking research using a novel method of Ultra-High Intensity Blasting to improve mine productivity. Ultra-High Intensity Blasting – A New Paradigm in Mining, authored by a team led by Dr Brent has been awarded the 2014 CEEC Medal by the Coalition for Eco-Efficient Comminution (CEEC). Congratulating Dr Brent on this significant achievement, Orica Managing Director Ian Smith said the quest to use the chemical energy in explosives to improve ore fragmentation and deliver a step change in mine processing efficiency was a priority for the global resources sector.“This research is a demonstration of Orica’s commitment to the development of resourceful solutions through innovation to improve mine productivity. The use of electricity to mill ore is usually the largest consumer of energy on a mine site and ore comminution constitutes a significant percentage of electricity consumed worldwide,” Smith said. “Independent modelling has indicated that increasing the explosive energy by several fold can lead to increases in mill circuit throughput of up to 40% and savings of tens of millions of dollars annually.”Speaking on behalf of the research team, Dr Brent said: “By utilising explosive energy in the pit to produce much finer ore we can dramatically increase the efficiency and throughput of the downstream comminution processes of crushing and milling. The overall energy consumption across the mining and milling cycle can be reduced with a consequent reduction in emissions. This is a step-change in ore processing. To date it has not been possible to blast at these ultra-high explosive energies, or powder factors, due to safety and environmental constraints. However, the new technique demonstrated for the first time that not only can these ultra-high energies be safely utilised but they can also deliver improved mine productivity and reduce environmental impacts in open pit mines. The key to the breakthrough has been to use the rock itself to contain the explosive energy by the selective deployment of state-of-the-art digital electronic initiation systems in novel blast designs. The new method was thoroughly tested in blast models and then verified in large scale production blasts.”He adds: “This breakthrough approach is particularly important given the worldwide trend of decreasing ore grades. More ore needs to be ground and processed in order to achieve production targets and this method has the potential to generate a step change in mine productivity, particularly in complex or lower grade ore bodies. It can render ore bodies that might ordinarily be uneconomic both affordable and practical to extract. The potential environmental benefits are also enormous. The technique has the potential to cut CO2 emissions associated with grinding by up to 30%.” In recognition of their research in the field Dr Brent and his research team will be presented with the 2014 CEEC Medal at the International Mining and Resources Conference to be held in Melbourne in September 2014.Orica has also just completed a strategic review of its chemicals business and as a result intends to pursue the separation of the chemicals business, either by demerger or sale. Orica’s two businesses, Mining Services and Chemicals, are both market leaders in their respective industries and each business is exposed to different end markets, industry drivers and competitive dynamics. The company stated that a separation of the businesses would allow Orica “to focus on its core Mining Services activities and capitalise on its global leadership positions in commercial explosives, ground support and sodium cyanide.”Orica Chemicals is a leading supplier of chemical products to the mining, water treatment and other industrial, food and cosmetics markets in Australia, New Zealand with a growing presence in Asia and Latin America. Its annual revenue is approximately A$1.2 billion. A demerger would create a separate ASX listing for the Chemicals business. It is expected that Orica Chemicals would “benefit from the freedom to develop its own corporate strategy, capital structure and financial policies appropriate for the business as a separately listed entity.”Orica said it has received a number of unsolicited enquiries from third parties expressing non-binding preliminary interest to acquire the Chemicals business. Whilst demerger is currently the preferred approach, Orica says it “will consider any alternatives that are in the interests of shareholders” and will give a further update on the proposed separation at its full year results announcement on November 19, 2014.
SOME MALE FOOTBALL fans in Scotland have found that visits to their favourite club helped them lose weight – and gave them a sneaky look behind the scenes. They took part in a new initiative to help male football fans lose weight, take more exercise, and improve their diet – and it has been pronounced a resounding success, according to new research published in The Lancet and BMC Public Health.FFITThe Football Fans in Training programme (FFIT) has run for three seasons at Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) clubs. The research was led by a team at the University of Glasgow, and shows that FFIT has proved extremely popular with men.It also shows that the programme is both effective and value for money, which was demonstrated in one of the world’s first randomised control trial (RCT) of a health programme delivered through professional sports clubs.Professor Sally Wyke, one of the two principal investigators from the University of Glasgow, said:After 12 months, the difference in weight loss between men who did the programme and men in a comparison group, who did not do the programme, was 4·94kg.ResultsThe study began in June 2011 and involved 747 men.The baseline measurements showed that 90 per cent of participants had a BMI (body mass index) over 30 kg/m2, which classified them as obese. One man told the researchers:I was very aware that every time I was buying a new suit, the trouser size was getting bigger and I just wanted to address it. And with FFIT having a tie with the team I’ve supported all my life, I felt that the two kind of – they fitted nicely. It meant I could do something [about my weight] and I could get a wee sneaky peek behind the scenes at the club. The men who participated in FFIT lost more than nine times as much weight as men who had not done the programme. As well as losing weight when they were on the 12-week programme, nearly 40 per cent of the men maintained a weight loss of at least 5 per cent of their original body weight a full 12 months later. This outcome is associated with lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer, and other health problems. The study also found that FFIT helped men reduce their waist size, body fat and blood pressure.Participants also increased their physical activity levels, as well as improving their diets and mental wellbeing.Derek Spence, who has lost 14·9kg (2 stones and 5lbs) since starting FFIT at Hibernian FC in September 2011, said that taking part in FFIT at the Hibs club gave him more confidence.Since then, I’ve done an 18 lap run around the pitch at Easter Road for charity, I play 90 minutes of football and 5-a-side. Things I wouldn’t have looked at before now, I do now.Professor Kate Hunt, from University of Glasgow and the other principal investigator, said that weight management and dieting are often wrongly viewed as women’s issues. This means “that some men do not want to take part in existing weight management programmes”, she said. The FFIT programme shows that men are keen and able to make positive changes to their health in the right circumstances, and the football club is a great setting for weight management and other health initiatives for men.“This model has real potential for the future,” said Professor Hunt.Read: Mayo doctors tell patients to ‘take a run and jump’>Read: Cases of obesity in developing countries ‘more than triples’ over 28 years>
As this games console cycle enters its twilight phase, gamers are becoming increasingly anxious to get any hint of what Sony and Microsoft have in the works. Well, a photo of what purports to be the controller for the PS4 has appeared online, and it’s got some interesting stuff going on.We’ve already heard rumors that Sony wanted to emulate the PS Vita and add biometrics, and this prototype suggets at least some of that functionality will be integrated. The controller is obviously a more bulky unit than the DualSock 3 currently shipping with Sony’s console. Prototypes are usually rough around the edges, but it isn’t the shape that’s catching everyone’s eye — it’s the PlayStation Move bar. Dead center at the top of the controller is a glowing bar that appears to be part of Sony’s Move system, a clone of the Nintendo Wii’s controller.Adding credence to this leak is the fact that Sony has been working on integrating Move behind the scenes. The company filed a patent last year for a game controller that merged the Move wand with a standard controller. The ergonomics of this approach are questionable, but it might be the only way to ensure Move gets used by consumers and developers alike.Aside from the potential motion-gaming features, the alleged new controller has concave tops on the analog sticks and a speaker (or maybe microphone) in the middle. The d-pad is also slightly sleeker and that looks to be a touch-sensitive area just above the sticks. Is this it? Is this the controller destined to be nestled in the sweaty hands of dedicated gamers for the next 5-10 years? We are getting tantalizingly close to Sony’s February 20 PlayStation event. The expectation is that the PlayStation 4 will be unveiled at that time.

A media released from the IMF on October 6 revealed that while credit lines to the private sector have remained flat, “Commercial banks remain liquid and well capitalized.”The #IMFreport explained that the average capital adequacy ratio stood at 27.8 percent for banks in The Bahamas, which is well above the regulatory requirement of 17 percent. The report also exposed that non performing loans were down for The Bahamas from 14.2 percent to 11.1 percent. The report shared that the strong buffer from external financial shocks at banks and the reduction in bad loans is because commercial banks are not lending as freely; their stance is described as cautious given the low growth environment in The Bahamas. While there is a positive from some perspectives for this healthy banking sector, the lack of lending sends an audible message that there is a serious problem when it comes to new business development in the country.#MagneticMediaNews

While everyone is busy with Diwali preparation, there are many less fortunate children who are deprived of celebrating and sharing the joy of the festival. And even though there are myriad organisations working towards their well-being, food and shelter, only a few go beyond their way for the underprivileged children’s happiness. Music can be a vessel for good as it creates happiness in everyone’s lives. It is like a stress buster and increases the happiness quotient in a person’s life. Keeping this in mind, this Diwali, The Artiste Foundation (TAF) and Musical Dreams have started an initiative to spread the festive cheer and happiness amongst the underprivileged with a “Happy Concert”. Team TAF and young artists of Musical Dreams Shruti Dhasmana (singer) and Ram Nepali (Guitarist) visited a school for underprivileged children, Naya Prayas at Bhatti Mines where the artists performed for children on various Bollywood songs. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfMeeta Nagpal, founder of TAF said, “Entertainment and music is everyone’s need. We perform for people of all walks of life. We realized that the less privileged people have limited options for entertainment due to scarce resources. With Diwali round the corner, we thought it as the best time to spread joy and happiness to these kids. Our motive to do these concerts is solely to spread happiness. Their claps, smiling faces and dancing moves encourage us to spread happiness in whatever way we can. This is our little contribution towards the society.” Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveSinger Shruti Dhasmana who along with Ram Nepali performed at the occasion shared, “I have performed at various national and international concerts in front of different sets of audience. This was my first time when I was performing in front of underprivileged kids and I must say this is amongst my most memorable performances so far. After performing here I have realized that money can’t buy you happiness and the love which I have received”.
September 25, 2018 The widespread disruption of AI is summed up best by Andrew Ng, the former chief scientist of Baidu, who views AI as the new electricity: “Just as electricity transformed almost everything 100 years ago, today I actually have a hard time thinking of an industry that I don’t think AI will transform in the next several years.”While most large corporations are undergoing technological transformations to use, support or offer AI technologies, the real magic takes place in the AI startup arena. According to CB Insights, the top 100 AI startups of 2017 have raised $11.7 billion in aggregate funding across 367 deals, thereby making the market rich with innovations plus financial backings.Related: How Investing in AI is About Investing in People, Not Just TechnologyThe most surprising AI startups and applications are those that are paving the way towards more unconventional verticals, such as insurance, background checks, real estate, health and retail. The unique application of AI in areas that aren’t traditionally high-tech is particularly fascinating for multiple reasons. For instance, it proves that with AI, all industries can be enhanced for greater efficiency and streamlined processes. When AI takes over time-consuming and tedious jobs, human counterparts are given more time for impactful contributions with greater value and tacit knowledge. Although many may argue that AI removes the human touch, it’s also important to bear in mind that it drives strategic and creative thinking at a larger scale. Here are four industries being disrupted by AI:1. InsuranceInsurance companies and their leaders have a lot to deal with lately, as reported by Deloitte’s latest market research report called Fintech by the numbers. As reported by Deloitte, “Political and regulatory upheavals around the world are changing some of the ground rules about how carriers are allowed to operate. An accelerating evolution in the way business is conducted is being driven by innovation and higher customer expectations, while disruptive newcomers are looking to take market share from incumbent insurers in the insurance industry.” Upheaval and changes create opportunities for savvy entrepreneurs, which is exactly what Lemonade is capitalizing on. Without relying on legacy players in the space, Lemonade blends insurance with tech and digitally transforms the user experience by appealing to consumers of all ages, removing costs and expediting claims. The data that is gathered helps drive efficiency and quantify risks. In December 2016, Lemonade set the world record for settling a claim in three seconds using its AI-powered claims bot, which ran 18 fraud algorithms simultaneously. Its technology understands the nature, severity and urgency of most claims. If any claim is too complex, it gets handed over to human counterparts for further manual analysis.2. Background checksAs President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda continues to be debated and laws are modified, employers need to keep a close watch on the reaction of the states to the administration’s federal employment law decisions. Changes made at federal regulatory agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) result in new business laws that can affect taxes and hiring practices.State and local legislation will continue to be big issues in screening in the next year. In 2017, there was an increase in legislation that bans asking for salary history in cities and states across the country. There will be more of these laws introduced in cities, municipalities and states in the next year. Ban the box laws have been sweeping the country for the last few years. The newest ban the box law went into effect in California on Jan. 1, 2018. The California law, which involves both the public and private sectors, states that employers cannot make a criminal history inquiry until after a conditional offer has been made to an applicant. State and city ban the box legislation will continue to pass in the new year.Related: Why Smart Cities Are a Golden Opportunity for EntrepreneursThanks to the above, the background industry has seen a spur in innovation and growth. Intelligo is leveraging AI and machine learning to conduct background checks on people and companies in just minutes. This reduces the wait time and frustrations that are traditionally associated with the backlogs of federal agencies and large financial corporations that rely on human analysts to manually conduct granular research across multiple mediums.Their solution quickly combs through thousands of data sources without concern of manual labor and offers a user-friendly interactive report, which presents actionable insights in a manner that is insightful yet easy to understand.3. Real estateIn 2017, real estate accounted for about 13.4 percent, or $2.6 trillion, of U.S. GDP, as reported by BEA.gov. That’s more than any other industry, including manufacturing at $2.2 trillion. Real estate, as a whole, covers a number of market segments, including commercial industries such as construction and rentals to residential with consumer housing. Real estate construction alone contributed more than $1 trillion to the economy last year, while apartment rental properties are worth north of $1.4 trillion. The real estate industry provides a huge market for opportunity. An example of AI in this space is from Compass, a startup that uses AI to connect potential homebuyers and renters with properties that best meet their needs. Though it is safe to say that there are multiple websites that offer a similar service, Compass perfected the art by breaking the mold and standing out. According to a representative of SoftBank Vision Fund, which invested $450 million in Compass, it is well positioned for future growth for building a “differentiated end-to-end tech platform that aggregates across diverse data streams to support agents and homebuyers through the entire process.”4. RetailIn an age where many claim that we are experiencing the retail apocalypse, Inturn proves that is not the case at all. If anything, we are only experiencing the latest shift in retail trends. According to Business Insider, by 2021 most retailers will invest in AI and IoT technologies for supply chain automation, location-based marketing, customer traffic sensors, machine learning, asset tracking and big data solutions. Inturn uses AI to empower brands and retailers to use automated workflow tools, a pricing optimization engine and business intelligence to gain visibility of their business and simplify the buying and selling of excess inventory.Related: Preparing for the Future of AIAs fascinating as these technological breakthroughs may be, it’s important to note that contrary to popular belief and Hollywood sci-fi blockbusters, AI is not set to take over jobs, or the world for that matter. AI exists to work alongside human counterparts for increased efficiency, so people can apply their skill sets towards more meaningful tasks without getting overwhelmed. Or, maybe AI will take over and rule the world, and make humans their working slaves (like when the FB chatbots started talking to themselves). Whatever the case, AI will continue to impact industries in the future, and it’s important for large institutions, decision-makers and enthusiasts to keep tabs on startups that are disrupting industries with AI so that they can stay ahead of the curve. And, potentially, stay ahead of the AI that will one day rule them in more ways than one. 7 min read Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. Windows 10: Microsoft retires HomeGroup by Martin Brinkmann on December 20, 2017 in Windows – Last Update: December 20, 2017 – 36 commentsMicrosoft plans to remove the HomeGroup functionality from its Windows 10 operating system. The company made the first step towards that goal in the most recent Insider Preview version of Windows 10 as it disabled it in that build. In “a note about HomeGroup” in the release announcement of the Windows 10 Insider Build, Microsoft confirms that HomeGroup will be retired. The company introduced HomeGroup in Windows 7 as a new option for home users to access printers, files, and media in home networks. The core idea was to assign all devices to a single HomeGroup to share access to files and printers between all devices. It is unclear how popular the feature was and is. It is clear however that it was never the only option that Windows users had in this regard, and it was not the best either for certain use cases. You could not add Mac OS X or Linux devices to a HomeGroup for instance. The end of HomeGroupEasily connecting to and sharing the important pieces of your digital life with those who matter most has never been easier with today’s Modern PCs and the cloud. Whether it’s connecting PCs and printers on your home network via the Share functionality in Windows or using OneDrive to share a photo album of your last vacation, Windows 10 makes connecting multiple devices and sharing content streamlined and simple. And it’s because of that evolution that with today’s build you’ll start to see us retire the HomeGroup service. While Microsoft removed the HomeGroup feature starting with the recently released build, it has not touched the user profile that is used for sharing nor the file, folder and printer shares; these continue to work.As it stands right now, Microsoft will pull HomeGroup from the next feature update of Windows 10 that will be out in March 2018. This won’t affect the feature on previous versions of Windows, nor on previous versions of the Windows 10 operating system.Microsoft’s explanation for the retiring of the HomeGroup feature is that it is not needed anymore. HomeGroup was “great” in the pre-cloud and pre-mobile era the company notes; the feature has run its course and has been replaced by modern alternatives so Microsoft.Microsoft recommends two company features to replace HomeGroup on devices running Windows 10:OneDrive for file storage. The Share functionality to share folders and printers without using the cloud.Using Microsoft Accounts to share data between apps that support syncing (e.g. Mail app). Now You: Have you used HomeGroup functionality on your Windows machines? News | July 23, 2008 Radiology Administrators Push Capital Injection in Imaging Equipment July 24, 2008 – U.S. hospitals with fewer than 200 beds are allocating more money to their budgeted capital spending for diagnostic imaging equipment in 2009, compared to 2008 spending levels, according to a newly released study by IMV Medical Information Division. “Capital budgets for diagnostic imaging equipment remained virtually flat between 2007 and 2008 in smaller U.S. hospitals,” observed Mary C. Patton, director of Market Research at IMV. “But, radiology administrators in these hospitals are generally bullish on capital spending plans for 2009. Many hospitals with aging diagnostic imaging equipment acknowledge that they cannot remain competitive if they continue to postpone investment in newer technologies.” IMV’s new report, Outlook for Investment in Diagnostic Imaging by US Hospitals, 2008-2009: The Radiology Administrator’s Perspective, provides specific insights about hospital radiology departments’ near-term plans for capital investment in new and replacement imaging modalities and related capital purchases such as PACS systems. The study found that radiology departments in hospitals in 100 to 199 bed size range, which budgeted an average of $1.061 million per site in capital spending for 2008, have budgeted an average of $1.401 million per site in capital spending for 2009, or an increase of over 32 percent. Similarly, radiology departments in hospitals with fewer than 100 beds, which budgeted an average of $538,200 per site in capital spending for 2008, are planning capital investments averaging $793,400 per site in 2009. Considering all of the facilities represented by the survey sample, MRI equipment stands out as the modality most likely to be purchased in 2009, followed by 16-slice and 64-slice CT scanners. Other modality acquisitions most likely to be considered priority purchases for 2009 include digital mammography equipment and ultrasound equipment. Other highlights of the report include: • 68 percent of the surveyed radiology administrators consider recent reductions in Medicare reimbursement for imaging procedures as a ‘very major challenge’ or ‘major challenge’ to growing or maintaining imaging services revenues in their hospitals • Recent imaging facility closures have had an impact on the perceived competition for imaging services for 10 percent of the hospital radiology departments in the survey sample • Pre-certification requirements for diagnostic imaging procedures are most likely to have affected candidates for MRI and CT scans. Some hospitals report that two- to three-day delays have become the norm for non-emergency diagnostic CT and MRI procedures • Over two-thirds of the survey respondents would be willing to purchase OEM-certified refurbished equipment for one or more leading diagnostic imaging modalities The report discusses specific strategies that hospital radiology departments are pursuing to introduce new technologies, to generate new revenue sources, and to improve operational efficiencies. Radiology administrators’ insights about expected changes in their local imaging services markets are also explored. Helloworld is feeling buoyant about growth in trading on its online platform Helloworld.com.au, despite a downgrade in its retail network of seven per cent. The decline in the network is likely to deliver a AUD $10 million reduction in the current financial year but the group expects the growth to help put adjusted earnings at AUD $40 million or $41 million.Helloworld remains optimistic that it will have more than 1,700 locations when it reaches 12 months since the launch of the brand in July, however only 890 locations have signed up currently.Helloworld’s projection was based on it finding 300 branded locations, 400 brand-carrying associate locations, 300 affiliate locations and a further 440 locations operating under the Concorde Agency Network.Helloworld chief executive Elizabeth Gaines said that Helloworld’s network had developed strongly and quickly. As of June 2014, 260 locations have received branding and signage and 15 more retrofitted as new ‘ambassador’ stores with new branding, design, layout, interiors and furniture.Helloworld also expects to achieve considerable cost reduction with a brand refresh due for June 30th.Source = ETB News: Tom Neale
